Fifth Grade
Language Arts: Learning to read and write is the basis for all learning. At Fifth grade the aim is to develop the child’s ability to express him/herself in fluent, confident and accurate English within an integrated program of speaking and listening, reading and writing. Fourth graders are expected to show an awareness of the potential of oral language. They will use a wide range of vocabulary and complex sentences to clearly express and explain their thought, needs, feelings, opinions, and ideas, as well as to inform, entertain, and influence others. Reading skills will pursue the ability to discuss and reflect on what has been read, talk about character motivations, and analyze details of plot and characterization. Written expression will continue reinforcing correct cursive letter formation, adequate spacing, proportion, legibility, and neatness. Specific grammar skills will include: capitalization, present/past/future tense verbs, punctuation marks, pronouns, comparative/superlative adjectives, subjects and predicates. Spelling skills will focus on accurately spelling high frequency words and spelling patterns of increasing complexity.
Mathematics: Through Cupeyville School’s Math program, students will become confident and competent mathematical problem-solvers. Students will be able to compute and have deep conceptual understanding of numbers and think critically. Fifth grade extend their learning of multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. They will solve problems that involve addition and subtraction of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Students will be introduced to concepts relating to algebraic expressions and probability, as well as refine their estimation skills and solve problems involving number operations and relationships, mathematical processes, geometric figures, probability, and measurements. Fifth graders will understand the concepts of mean, median, mode, and range sets and can calculate them.
Science: Fifth grade science is a course designed to introduce students with important aspects of life, Earth, and physical science. Some of the topics explored and presented are: cells, animal classification, human growth, heredity, and cycle of nature, living interactions, preservation of the ecosystem, matter, atoms, forces, and energy. Each content area is enriched with a variety of activities for hands-on, minds-on types of learning experiences.
Social Studies: Fifth grade Social Studies cover the highlights of the history regions that will become the United States from pre-history to modern times. Geography and mapping skills are stressed along with political science, citizenship, economic, and behavioral science concepts. Students will also understand the chronology and significance of key events leading to self-government, such as: Civil War, Revolutionary War, etc.)
